Field and Laboratory Research Support

Salary £13,260 Year 1, £17,316 Year 2

Fixed Term 24 Months

The work undertaken by The James Hutton Group is at the top of the global agenda tackling problems such as the impact of climate change and threats to food, biodiversity, soils and water security.

Working in one of either , the Environmental & Biochemical Sciences (EBS) or Ecological Sciences (ES) research groups, these exciting opportunities for Modern Apprenticeships in Life Sciences (Level 2) will allow the post holders to complete a common training foundation which will equip them in essential field and laboratory skills. Individuals will then go on to develop specialist skills in one of the following areas :

  • Microbial Ecology
  • Soil Survey and Analyses
  • Ecology and Agricultural research

At the Institute, the Modern Apprentices will work alongside Research and Technical staff to gain experience and skills in supporting scientific research across diverse areas of environmental and ecological research.

Two of the posts will be based at our Aberdeen site and the third will be based at our Invergowrie site.  There will be a requirement for occasional travel between Dundee and Aberdeen for work, training and assessment.

All of these appointments are for a 24-month duration and will start in August 2019. Over this period, modern apprentices will work towards Life Sciences Level 2 (SCQF Level 6) in conjunction with Dundee and Angus College, gaining skills and qualifications relevant to a career in scientific research support. Upon successful completion of year 1, salaries will increase to the Living Wage (currently £17,316), to move to year 2 year 1 must be successfully completed.  To apply, you will currently have, or expect to attain, one Higher qualification in Chemistry, Biology or Geography and National 5 qualifications in Mathematics, English or related subject. You will also have basic skills in Microsoft Office, good verbal and written communication skills and be a good team worker.
